Costs of In-Patient Treatment in German Hospitals

The costs of in-patient treatment in hospitals in Germany increased by 5.7% to approximately 98.8 billion euros in 2019 compared with a year earlier (2018: 93.5 billion euros). When related to roughly 19.4 million people who were treated as in-patients in hospital, the costs per case averaged 5,088 euros, which was 5.5% more than in 2018 (4,823 euros). The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that hospital costs rose by 18.8 billion euros or just under one fourth (+23.5%) from 2014 to 2019.
